An Inspiring Shiur For Adar

I just listened to an interesting shiur about Parshas Shekalim by Mrs. Shira Smiles (free registration on Naaleh required for access to the entire shiur). I really enjoy Mrs. Smiles’s shiurim. Her style is a combination of intellectual and inspirational; she usually teaches a deeper understanding of the mitzvos with lots of textual sources (source sheets available in the Naaleh sidebar).

Here are some of my notes from the shiur.

The half-shekel represents fundamental strengths of the Jewish People:

1) The passion for mitzvos. Kesef is related to the root word “lichsof,” to have a longing. We counterbalance the effects of Amalek (apathy) by having and nurturing a passion for mitzvos. The work of Adar is iyun b’mitzvos, learning the depth of mitzvos. The more you learn about a mitzvah and find understanding and insight, the greater your passion for the mitzvah grows.

2) The unity of Klal Yisroel. We complete ourselves when our “half” is attached to the entirety of the Jewish People. Purim is the time to try to forgive and reconnect with people you’ve fallen out of touch with. It’s also the time to find people who are lonely and be there for them.

3) Emunah. The understanding that in this world, we’re only seeing half the story.

Who do you enjoy listening to? Any shiurim for Purim to recommend?

Have a good Shabbos!
