Counting Up

I heard a nice idea about Sefiras Ha’Omer last Shabbos. The question that is often asked is why we count up towards matan Torah, when we ordinarily would count down towards an exciting event?

Rav Shimshon Pincus brings the pasuk describing Yaakov Avinu’s experience working for Rachel – the seven years were like “yomim achadim.” What made them go quickly if he was waiting to marry Rachel?

The answer he gives is that each day in itself was full of growth. The days piled up on top of each other and went by quickly because they were meaningful and used to the fullest. And so in our lives, when we wait for something, the days have potential to be filled with meaningful growth and work, so that they pile up towards the event we are waiting for.
