Alone in a Hotel Room

I’ve been alone in hotel rooms in various cities and countries: York, New Orleans, Saratoga Springs, Miami, Prague. I’m alone in a hotel room now. And it’s been fine, even cozy and luxurious. But it’s also lonely, and has a way of awakening a deep existential loneliness in me.

 

The Trumpet of the Swan, by E.B. White, captures the interesting mix of feelings one sometimes has in a hotel room, alone:

 

To be all alone in a hotel room gives a person a cozy feeling and a feeling of importance.

 

and

 

A hotel room, even though it has every convenience, can be a lonely place.

 

So that is all. Just sharing that being alone in a hotel room can be luxurious and fun, and deeply lonely.
