A Wakeup Call

Last night was…not a great night for Jews in New York. I was pretty shaken up and it felt like a personal wakeup call to me. I often find politics to be a fun diversion – I’ll check the polls every day, etc. – but when a big disappointment like last night happens, I remind myself that at the end of the day, it doesn’t make that big a tangible difference in my personal life (at least I hope not) and I shouldn’t give it an outsized place. Politics, like many things, can be a way to feel like part of something bigger, to focus outward and away from the stuff of your own life. That’s helpful, but sometimes I need a reminder to turn my attention back inward.

Maybe this is meaning that I can make from last night’s disappointment, while I release the care of my beautiful New York City to Hashem, Who runs not only the city but everything.
