That may be an overly optimistic heading, but I can explain. In August, I spent Shabbos with my cousins and sister, and got to talking about the book How To Winter, extolling its role in helping me enjoy last winter more than any winter before. We decided to form a book club around it, read it chapter by chapter week by week, and put into practice what we were reading about. We started to do this right after Succos. The first chapter is about readying for winter — knowing that it is coming, and preparing physically and mentally. The clock change is discussed as one of the points in winter that people really struggle with. We decided to implement the author’s suggestion to prepare for the week or two after the clock change, with intention — e.g., clearing the calendar, finding ways to recognize it, instituting rituals around the earlier nights.
So, we all came up with ideas. I decided that it would be nice to get to bed early next week, and try to read in bed until I fall asleep, something I haven’t done in awhile. I’ve also made plans for this Sunday — a walk to Trader Joe’s in the morning with a friend (about thirty minutes) to buy seasonal treats, and a date to watch the live action Madeline with another friend Sunday night (yes, a kids’ movie).
Some other ideas from the group were: change bedding (add heavier quilt that’s really cozy, almost like a weighted blanket), watch on old movie myself on clock change night, break out the candles
I hope this is helpful – how are you preparing for the clock change?
