This weekend I did quite a bit of reading (children’s books), and all that reading had me thinking about reading with my children which had me thinking about educating my children which had me thinking about homeschooling my children, again.
I do get into these obsessive topical swirls from time to time, fueled by longing and discontent, and I generally don’t know quite what to do with that energy. But then it passes.
In the meantime, what are the things I want to learn with/experience with/teach my children? A brain dump in no particular order:
-a coherent narrative of history – this is one reason I like the classical approach to education
-art appreciation – learning how to look at a work of art
-music appreciation – learning how to listen to a piece of music
-nature study – learning how to look at the world around them
-lots of read-aloud – lots!
-also poetry
-playing with arts and crafts supplies
-learning by experiencing the world – even if that is mostly close to home
I don’t, strictly speaking, need to homeschool my children to create this environment for them. That’s comforting to recognize! In the meantime what I can do is experience these things myself, learn and embody the person who can give these things to my children be”H one day…
