Enjoy Your Commute

When listening to Cheaper by the Dozen a short while ago, it occurred to me that commuting is what the Gilbreths would refer to as “unavoidable delay.” While commuting time can certainly be directed towards productivity of certain kinds (like learning), I think it can also be nice to dedicate it to high-quality enjoyment. My recommendations are (no surprises) audiobooks, e-books if you are not driving (physical books can work too, but if you are walking any distance with your work bag it can be nice to lighten up), and pre-chosen music. On that note, I have been listening to cast albums and film soundtracks straight through (well, there’s always that song or two you always skip), and this feels somehow like a low-key accomplishment.

You can also bring a snack for your commute home, if it’s long, to take the edge off things. And you can add short detours for some scenery or novelty (in either direction).

So these are my tips for making your commute an almost-cozy part of your day. What are yours? (Do you commute?)
