Personality Typing, Again (Plus Succos)

Remember how I said that I was skeptical about the validity of personality typing? Well, Myers-Briggs changed that for me, and now I’ve discovered something new: the Enneagram. Are you familiar with it? The Enneagram is a system that examines nine personality types, and their strengths and weaknesses, growth opportunities etc. I bought a copy of The Enneagram Made Easy so I could take the quizzes for each type and mark anything in the corresponding chapters that I felt described me. Apparently I’m a 4 (the Romantic – deep, spiritual…) with a developed 5-wing (the Observer – intellectual, curious…). And I’m a bit of a 2 as well (the Helper – warm, giving…). Since you asked.

Like I had said last time, it’s hard to believe that letters or numbers could sum up a person, but finding myself in the book was just so cool and validating. I think this is such a fun book to go through, and it can help you learn a lot about yourself. I definitely gained from it. It would be fun to do with a friend or family member, too.

Miriam Adahan also has a book based on the Enneagram (which I haven’t read, full disclosure).

I want to wish you all a good and happy Yom Tov and a gmar tov. Enjoy your succah, the beautiful Yom Tov tefillos, the delicious food, and the stars twinkling through your s’chach. Rav Pincus zt”l brings down from the Zohar that the minimum width of the succah is two amos because that is the arm span of a person and a succah is a hug from Hashem. I hope you can take a few minutes to breathe deeply of the succah air and feel Hashem’s hug.

One of my friends and I met in shul on Hoshanah Rabba the past couple years, and hopefully we will make it again. Either way, Hoshanah Rabba is a special opportunity to daven for a good year!

And one more thing, because this is too important 😉 : My personal minhag is to drizzle my challah with maple syrup instead of honey (and yes, dip my apple in it too). It’s like eating French toast!

Have a beautiful chag!

If you enjoyed the Myers-Briggs test, I Highly recommend Please Understand Me II by David Keirsey. Also, as far as personality tests go I’ve found Myers-Briggs to be a lot more intuitive and nuanced than the Enneagram. (If you do like the Enneagram, Adahan’s book is fun but way longer than it needs to be.)
