Solitude

Two books I read earlier this year discussed loneliness versus solitude. According to Together, by Vitek Murthy, solitude is “peaceful aloneness” or intentional isolation that helps us connect with ourselves, and enhances our emotional well-being. Seeking solitude is actually a protective factor against loneliness. Mary Pipher writes that we can intentionally “alchemize” our loneliness into solitude by enjoying our own company and keeping company with books, memories of loved ones, (also pets but that I don’t have experience with). I love this poem, which reminds me of the inner resources one can call up during a time of solitude.

Something to think about: how might I alchemize loneliness into solitude?
