Word Choice

The language of shidduchim could be a dissertation in itself. Of course we have the “girls and boys,” and the never not remembering that we’re experiencing a “crisis.” Recently I cracked up at seeing 23-year-old women referred to as “mature singles” (I’m laughing again typing this), and I’m glad that I’ve personally heard a lot less of “on the market” than I used to. But one word in particular both irks and tickles me for some reason, and that is the “plight” of the single lady. “Plight” just sounds so…pitiful, in a most undignified yet slightly-hilarious way. Maybe it sounds old-fashioned to my ear? Or like it misses the mark yet is meant so sincerely? What are your thoughts?
