Springboards

This is the journaling technique that I used most intuitively when I got into journaling months ago. A Springboard is a writing prompt to launch you into your writing session. It’s a sentence or two that you plunk on the top of the page without thinking too hard, and use as an entryway to your writing session. It may be a question, quote, or thought that’s on your mind. A Springboard is not meant to necessarily direct the content of your journal entry; its purpose is to prime the pump. Sometimes I’ll jot down a Springboard and then proceed to write two or more pages about something unrelated.

Possible Springboards: a song lyric, memorable words you read or overheard, a phrase from davening or Tehillim, any question you’ve been asking yourself (or the universe) like “What’s the most important thing right now?” or “What do I want to be doing?” or open ended statements like “Today _____ is on my mind,” or “I feel ______.”

The source for this technique is Journal to the Self, by Kathleen Adams.

I hope this is helpful! Enjoy trying it out!
